About Rambert Grades and our history

Who are Rambert Grades?

Rambert Grades is an awarding organisation which provides training and qualifications in contemporary dance across four levels and eleven grades.

Grounded in professional practice, we embrace an ethos of inclusive dance education which works with the whole person and develops transferable skills.

What is your history? What is Rambert?

Rambert is a collective of three organisations: Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, Rambert dance company and Rambert Grades.

About our dance syllabi

What Grades are there?

For ages 3+, we have three Creative Dance grades: Creative Movers, Pre-Primary and Primary.

Following this, students progress through Grades 1 - 8 in Creative Contemporary Dance, which reaches a pre-vocational level of training.

Discover more here.

Is your dance training inclusive?

Yes. Inclusivity is at the heart of progressive dance education. Rambert Grades dance training places the individual at the core of student development.

All students from all backgrounds and all abilities are encouraged to enter examinations, and teachers are supported to make reasonable adjustments as required to accommodate students with additional needs.

Are your qualifications regulated or accredited?

Yes. All Rambert Grades Examinations sit on the Ofqual Register of Qualifications. You can find this here

What is contemporary dance?

Emerging in the mid-20th century, contemporary dance is a dynamic and evolving art form that invites dancers to explore and interpret a wide range of movements and expressions. Contemporary dance embraces influences from ballet, jazz, lyrical and street dance forms and is at the heart of professional dance today and is ubiquitous in popular culture, from theatre stages to our screens.

Examinations

What is the exam process?

All examinations are recorded by the teacher in the student’s familiar setting and submitted to us digitally through our secure portal.

Exam candidates are registered by the teacher in advance, adhering to our quarterly registration deadlines.

How much are dancer exams?

Current examination costs may be accessed on this page.

What should dancers wear for their exam?

There is no required uniform for our examinations. Dancers should wear what they feel comfortable in and this must be safe to dance in. If you’re preparing for an examination, please speak to your teacher who will guide you on what to wear.

Do examinations contribute to UCAS points?

Level 3 qualifications, Grades 6, 7 and 8 attract UCAS points, supporting career progression into Higher Education, even outside of dance.

For example, achieving the three highest grades with Merit earns 42 UCAS points, equivalent to a B at A-Level. With a Distinction, the 60 UCAS points awarded equate to an A at A-Level.
